Richard Powers Dance Workshop

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the class topics?

See Schedule.

Do I need a partner?

No, you do not need to sign up with a partner. We will be attempting to balance leaders and followers. If you are a follower, we encourage you to sign up with a lead buddy (and vice versa), or to sign up for the “either” role. All classes will feature frequent partner rotation.

I have a partner (or a lead follow buddy): how do we register together?

You can either:

  • Register separately and note one another’s names on your registrations. You will then check out and pay separately.

  • Add both people to the cart (a leader and a follower or some combination with one or both of you in the “either” role). You will then check out and pay together.

What is a lead/follow buddy?

A lead/follow buddy is someone you register with to ensure you both get in should the registrations skew toward too many leaders or followers. In Colorado we tend to have many more followers than leaders.

What is the “either” role?

Those who register for the “either” role should be happy to dance as either a leader or a follower, and will switch roles as the needs of each class change. We encourage all who have both lead and follow skills to register as “either.”

The follow role is sold out; what should I do?

You can:

  • Find a lead/follow buddy to register with you. Fill out the contact us form and we will release a follow slot for you.

  • If you are comfortable both leading and following, sign up for the “either” role.

  • Wait for more leaders to register; fill out the contact us form to be put on a wait list.

What are the prerequisites?

All attendees should be comfortable with cross-step and/or rotary waltz basics.

What about meals and refreshments?

The class sessions and the Saturday evening dance will feature light refreshments. If you have dietary restrictions, preferences, or specific caffeination needs, please bring your own.

Saturday lunch will feature a sandwich and salad bar, including gluten-free and vegetarian options; if you have other dietary restrictions or requirements, please bring what you need each day. We will not serve onions or garlic.

How dressy is the Saturday evening dance? Is it a costume event?

That is entirely up to you! Those who enjoy costuming or dressing up are welcome to bring on the glitz. Others may prefer something plainer. The evening them is “Raining Fire,” in celebration of the Perseids meteor shower, which peaks that weekend.

What should I bring?

  • Non-marking dance shoes

  • A water bottle—at our high, dry elevation, you’ll want to stay hydrated. Water fountains for refilling are available.

  • A shirt change (or two), especially if you sweat

  • Deodorant—although The Avalon is air conditioned, we all appreciate minimizing body odor

  • Snacks/meals (see what about meals and refreshments)

How does volunteering work?

We will appreciate your help with a number of small tasks over the weekend. We hope you'll give a little of your time to help make the weekend run smoothly. To make sign-up easy, we’ve added volunteer opportunities to the registration process. If you are able, please sign up. If not, we understand.

What amenities are available at The Avalon?

  • Free level 2 EV chargers

  • Free and plentiful parking

  • A number of restaurants are nearby

If I get sick, or can’t come for another reason, can I get a refund?

Registrations are fully refundable through July 10.  After that, the payment is non-refundable unless there is an applicant on the wait list who is able to take your spot.

Also, in the day or so before the workshop: if you have symptoms of any illness, please stay home. Please contact us at director@watch-your-step.org for a refund.
